I feel as though we’ve been making some amazing little changes in our home lately and I thought it would be fun to share them with you today, possibly inspiring you to incorporate one or two into your day-to-day! Let’s dig right in!!
Being More Conscious
I am trying to be more purposeful with everything I do. That means cutting down on multi-tasking, putting down my phone more, and really thinking about my actions before I do them. Should I buy x? Why not go local instead? It's after 10:00pm... I should stop doing work and snuggle my guy, who I haven't seen all day. We need groceries-- don't forget the trolley or the reusable bags! Being more conscious of everything means less mistakes and usually taking action that is beneficial to myself, my community, or the environment.
My husband was the one who introduced me to "Head Space" and we've been loving it! It helps him with his anxiety attacks and it helps keep me grounded and focused on how I'm feeling. Sometimes my mind wanders away, so I'm glad I have the guided narration to reel me back in.
Josh and I have recently begun doing night walks after dinner around our block to see a cow mailbox I have dubbed "Moo Moo." Every time I pass Moo Moo I give it a pat on the nose and then we continue the long loop back home. It's good mild exercise after eating a possibly heavy meal, and we keep our phones away (I keep mine at home and the husband keeps his in his pocket to track his steps) which allows for uninterrupted conversation. It's something new we've added to our nightly rituals and afterwards we just shower up and head to bed! I've read before that walking after dinner helps promote digestion and I'm all for that.
I don't know what it is about summer or the long days, but it makes me feel more motivated to get my life together. We have been working on getting healthier and stronger in my household, and that means keeping an eye on portion control for certain food (like chocolate or mac'n'cheese). "You can't outrun a bad diet" they say, and it is 100% true! I want to tone up before my upcoming trip to Spain (where I will be eating A LOT with my family) and keep that momentum going through the winter, meaning I have to make sure I am eating healthy and small. I have been loving on "at home workouts" I'm finding on Youtube that make me sweat and sore-- just as if I had been to a gym!-- in about 20 or 30 minutes, max. When we move to Perth, I'm hoping to take advantage of my school's facilities and get more into boxing and reformer pilates to vary my exercises.
With our move cross-country to Perth coming up, we have been battening down the hatches and making sure every penny counts... but also know we need to enjoy our time in Sydney and not deprive ourselves of a good time every now and then. The massive move also allows us to down-size and get rid of stuff (such as clothes, old furniture) that "no longer brings us joy" as Marie Kondo says. Let's just say I'm very excited to get rid of our current bed frame that I keep jamming my knee against for something less... pokey. AND WITH A HEADBOARD, PRAISE!!
Reducing Animal Consumption
While we aren’t vegan or vegetarian by any means, our household is trying our very best to reduce our amount of animal consumption. It has been a work in progress over the last few months, but I am proud to say we are eating less meat (especially red meat) and are focusing on meals that are plant-based more and more. While we won't say no to a burger on a night out and still love ribs, we are conscious that our dietary habits can lead to an unhealthy us and help contribute to an unhealthy planet. Baby steps!
We Have Our Own Garden
Thanks to my friend Helen for the inspiration (and to Mama Louise, Sarah and Alyssa for the advice). We planted our very first garden this year and we are obsessed with it! While some of the plants we will try to take with us when we move to Perth (such as one of the basil plants, the raspberry plant, and our lemon tree), it has been a great learning lesson and when we DO get a juicy tomato or use our basil to make a home-made pesto, you can bet your booty we appreciate every last bite! We are excited to plant some more in our new place in Perth when the time comes.
I hope some of these have inspired you to make a little tweak here or there in your life. Comment below and share some of your little changes with me!
